Mastectomy Lingerie Frequently Asked Questions

Eloise Lingerie have been specialists in mastectomy lingerie since 1994. With 17 years of experience we are happy to provide advice on the best lingerie and swimwear for you, whether you have just had surgery, or you simply have concerns about your everyday bras or prosthesis. A few of the frequently asked questions which we have received over the years are below.

I'm about to have surgery, what bra do I need?

If you are about to have a mastectomy or a lumpectomy, then it's important to have the right bra after surgery. It will allow you to heal, accommodate swelling and most importantly, feel comfortable. We recommend a special post surgery bra, that is soft against the skin and is front fastening, which you may feel is easier if you have impaired movement in your arm. All of our post surgery bras contain pockets or cup linings to insert a lightweight breast form, also known as a comfie. If you are having reconstructive surgery, a compression bra may be suggested as the best option.

What happens next?

About 6-8 weeks later after healing, you will be ready to wear a more supportive bra with a silicone prosthesis. We recommend you come and see us to ensure you are in the correct size and shape of bra. Eloise stock bras from Amoena, Royce and Anita in our mastectomy bra range, offering an excellent choice of different styles. We are more than happy to fit and advise you on your lingerie and breast prosthesis so that it best matches your natural shape.

How many bras do I need?

We would recommend you have a small collection of different bras to suit different outfits. You may also prefer different bras and prosthesis for daywear, leisurewear and special occasions. Start with three different bras, one to wear, one to wash and one in the drawer. The average life span of a bra is 6 months so remember to replace your bras regularly.

Can I wear Underwires?

We would not recommend wearing an underwired bra immediately after a mastectomy as the delicate tissue around the scar needs time to heal. Usually you can wear an underwired bra approximately 4-6 months after surgery if you feel comfortable and you have the all clear from the doctor. It is important that you are fitted correctly for your underwired mastectomy bra to make sure the wires are not digging into to the delicate tissue surrounding the scar.

What about exercise, do I need specialist bras or swimwear?

Most nurses will encourage you to be active after surgery. We have sports bras for low impact sports such as yoga, and more supportive styles for high impact activity such as running, tennis or horse-riding. Once you have completed your treatment, swimming is one of the best low-impact forms of exercise. Therefore we stock specially designed swimming prostheses that allow the water to drain quickly away, and chlorine resistant mastectomy swimsuits with pockets inside to keep you secure and confident. We also have beautiful, fashionable pocketed swimsuits, bikinis and tankinis should you want to go away somewhere fabulous to get away from it all.

I don't feel comfy in my bras or prosthesis. What can I do?

We are always happy to offer advice over the phone or through email, but to receive the best service we recommend you come in and see us for a free fitting. The one to one consultation will take you through through the best bra and prosthesis styles for your shape and is invaluable for those ladies who don't know where to start in their journey for comfort and style.

Amoena in the Spotlight

Amoena is an established brand of mastectomy lingerie, suitable for ladies who have had full or partial mastectomies, lumpectomies or breast reconstruction. Their aim is to provide women who have gone through any kind of surgery with everything they need to look and feel as good as ever. At Eloise, we have picked our favourites from the Amoena collection, including gorgeous lingerie, swimwear and breast prostheses, making sure that you still have the classic basics, but also something a little more special.

One of our favourites from the Amoena 2011 collection is the Rebecca Mastectomy Bra. Available in both non-wired and underwired, this pretty lace bra has been specifically designed for the fuller sizes, made from a stretch lace it fits beautifully and retains it's shape well. The wider straps offer a vintage charm to the bra, but also give a little more support. Another must have this season would be the Angelina Mastectomy Bra. This is an ultra light moulded foam cup bra, that offers a smooth shape without adding volume to the bust, plus it features some pretty embroidery detail at the top of each cup. The straps are padded and tapered for support and comfort.

The Amoena swimwear collection is a versatile range of mix and match sets. One of our key pieces this summer is the Nizza swimwear range. Choose from two different swimsuits, or a tankini or bikini top with briefs. All are styled in a classic black, with a white print that adds a flattering detail. This Amoena swimwear range is chlorine resistant, giving it a longer life, plus the tops are pre-pocketed so will keep your prosthesis safe and secure. Amoena also offer a swimform which will sit nicely inside your mastectomy swimwear. It is a water resistant, clear swimform that is not harmed by salt or chlorine making it perfect for regular swimming. It is also slightly hollowed at the back to reduce the weight.

The full Amoena lingerie range is available now at Eloise Lingerie, browse the collection here and treat yourself to this seasons must have lingerie and swimwear.

Finding the Right Prosthesis for You

As with a bra fitting, each prosthesis is different so it is important to find the right one for you. There are different weight, colour and volume options to choose from and we can help advise you on which breast form is most suitable for you.

Silicone breast prostheses are carefully handmade and hand finished, resembling the density and movement of a natural breast as closely as possible, hence their higher cost. Cheaper alternatives are available but rarely tend to last as long or give as natural a shape.

If you do not require a full prosthesis after a mastectomy, but need something to balance out uneven shape following partial or reconstructive surgery, then have a look at our shell breast prosthesis or silicone breast enhancer which are perfect for providing either slightly more projection or a small amount of compensation to the lower bust.

New technologies provide fantastic innovations in terms of comfort and shape. Lighter weight options and heat regulating properties are just some of the new features which are available. We also provide foam and leisure prostheses ideal for post surgery and leisure activities. For regular swimmer we have a clear silicone prostheses specifically designed for swimming.

The key to getting a perfect fit and shape is to ensure that you are correctly fitted for your bra and prosthesis. Your ideal prosthesis should mimic your bust shape whilst wearing a good fitting bra. So take in to account that your bust shape without a bra will be quite different and not give you the right match. With hundreds of shapes, sizes and styles to choose from, your Eloise fitter will be able to guide you through the choices to find the perfect prosthesis that feels comfortable and replicates your remaining breast to restore a natural outline.

Prostheses are sized by numbers instead of bra size. We have designed a chart below to help you select your ideal prosthesis size. Simply select your underbust and cup size to choose your prosthesis. Check the diagram below to see which best describes your bust shape. Bear in mind that there is always a slight difference between manufacturers so this is only intended as a guide.

The best way of ensuring you have the perfect prosthesis is to come in for a fitting where our friendly, professional staff are happy to help, ensure you are confident and comfortable and leave you feeling like a new woman. Contact us now to book a fitting.

Below are a few helpful hints as to how to best look after your prosthesis. Your silicone prosthesis can last if you treat it well.

  • Wash everyday with warm soapy water and pat dry with a towel

  • Adhesive prostheses are best left to air dry

  • Take care not to pierce your prosthesis with pins / brooches etc

  • A waterproof plaster will provide a temporary fix until you can replace your prosthesis.

  • Keep your prosthesis in it's care box whilst not in use to retain it's shape.

  • Where stated that the prosthesis is suitable for swimming, please rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of chlorine or salt.

If your prosthesis is...

  • Feeling too hot or heavy

  • Moving around or falling out of the cup

  • Showing above the bra at the front, under the arm and below the underband

  • Gives you an uneven outline for your bust

...it may be time for a new prosthesis. Our specialist team is always here to help, simply call 0845 22 55 080 for advice or to book a specialist fitting.

Summer Wardrobe Tips

The weather has been glorious, and it highlights that summer is fast approaching. With this in mind, it's time to start planning your summer wardrobe. The key is basics, with some statement items to bring your outfit to life.

Starting with the essentials, we think it's good to get in those staple pieces. Like these Amoena Pocketed Camisoles, simple pocketed tops, that are incredibly versatile. Made from a soft modal cotton, they feature a rounded neckline and back with double spaghetti straps. They also have a small rhinestone detail on the back to add a touch of sparkle. Plus the Valetta camisole is available in 5 colours, classic black, brown and white, but also brights such as aqua and raspberry that are on trend in tropical shades. These gorgeous tops can be worn on their own simply with a skirt or jeans, or layered with tunics and cardigans.

Kaftan's and tunics are great at both keeping you cool in the day, but can also be worn in the evening for a glamorous look. The Acapulco Heat Kaftan is a beautiful light and airy, printed tunic. In a bold tropical print, you'll turn heads on a summers day. If you'd like something a little more subtle, the Anita Urban Dreams Cover-up Lumbaia is simply stunning. In a deep purple, it has pretty cap sleeves and ties together under the bust. This would look simply stunning with some statement jewellery and a pair of lightweight trousers.

At Eloise, we understand that getting the right underwear under summer clothes can be a little tricky, with lower cut necklines and spaghetti straps. We recommend you find a good multi-way bra, the Amoena Lea Underwired bra is perfect for strappy dresses. It can be worn as a crossover, halterneck, or in the standard setting. It also comes with a set of clear straps for bandeau tops, so you get a discreet look with the same support. Camisole bras can also work well under lower cut clothes. A lace panel that stretches between the cups, stays close to your skin even whilst moving around, meaning you don't have to wear an extra layer.

Remember that Eloise Lingerie offer specialist advice in mastectomy lingerie, so whatever your Summer wardrobe dilemmas, our team will be able to help you find the right lingerie solution. Browse the whole collection here, or call 0845 22 55 080 for advice.
